Wearing: Newport Cola Readers. Lives: Sydney. Occupation: Cafe Manager/Barista.

Miguel manages an amazing cafe in Clareville. He loves his customers and the community loves him. Things run smoothly when he's in charge. He's well travelled with some amazing stories and equally amazing tattoos.

1. What do you love about being working in hospitality?
I've always loved being in hospitality. Being able to be a part of people's morning (and be the caffeine provider) gives me a good opportunity to connect with the community on a different level. You've got issues? Tell your barista. They're always willing and wanting to listen.

2. Favourite book to read by the pool?
"The Alchemist" by Paulo Coelho. Every time I read it, I learn a new lesson.

3. Favourite place to soak up the sun?
Flint and Steel Beach. Isolated, quiet and secret. But keep it a secret!

4. What makes a good community for you?
Active banter. Being able to communicate effectively (with a laugh) towards a common goal is such an important part of a community.

5. “I like that tattoo, it looks interesting. Who did it, where and when?”
My bicep piece? I had the true honour of being tattooed by the oldest living tattoo artist, Apo Whang Od, (featured in the April 2023 edition of Vogue) in the Philippines in September 2022.

After almost 15 hours on buses, a daringly sketchy motorcycle ride and a sweaty, near vertical hike to the remote village of Buscalan (north of Manila), I was graciously adorned with Apo Whang Od's signature 3 dots (representing her first 2 apprentices and herself) as well as the symbols of the mountain and the fern (by one of her proteges), which were all administered using the traditional method of a large thorn, a bamboo hammer and ash.

Funnily enough, the 3 dots done by Apo Whang Od were so much more painful than the rest of the piece. But what's life without a little pain and the risk of infection :).

6. A nice quote or piece of advice someone gave you that has helped you navigate life.
"Don't sweat the petty, pet the sweaty" - Random legend that I met whilst hiking in Nicaragua.
